Get news on fisheries & aquaculture by typing keywords in the search ox. Oxfam advocates and comments on issues relating to poverty and equity in natural resources. http://www.oxfam.org/eng/pdfs/bn050326_tsunami_women.pdfThere is no scarcity of reflections and commentary on the impact of the disaster that shook the coasts of several Asian countries on 26 December 2004. The media have, at least until recently, looked into almost every conceivable angle: the impact on tourism, the impact on the environment, revealed underwater villages, even the impact on animals. One area that has so far received less attention is the gender impact of the tsunami, and its impact on women in particular. As a result, we are a long way from really understanding the social impacts of the disaster, let alone what concrete steps must be taken to ensure that both the immediate response and long-term policies are effective in bringing relief. This briefing seeks to promote debate and awareness of the issues and to ensure that the recovery phase of the relief effort integrates the problems raised. It looks at the impact of the tsunami in Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka, and in particular at how it has affected women. It concludes with some recommendations about how we can start addressing the problems raised.

Wetlands International’s mission is “to sustain and restore wetlands, their resources and biodiversity for future generations”.
Our strategy In order to fullfil our mission, we have adopted the following four long-term strategic global goals: Global Goal 1: Stakeholders and decision makers are well-informed about the status and trends of wetlands, their biodiversity and priorities for action Global Goal 2: The functions and values of wetlands are recognised and integrated into sustainable development Global Goal 3: Conservation and sustainable use of wetlands is achieved through integrated water resource management and coastal zone management Global Goal 4: Large scale, strategic initiatives result in improved conservation status of species, habitats and ecological networks How we work Wetlands International is a science-based organisation.
