APFIC member country policy documents | APFIC member country policy documents In 2006 APFIC commissioned a regional review and synthesis of fisheries and aquaculture policy content and direction in selected Asian countries, as background to the APFIC Regional Consultative Forum in Malaysia held in August 2006. This section contains a number of policy documents from APFIC member countries and is a valuable background resource on fishery policy. The overview policy document can also be downloaded here. The country links also link to the FAO Fishery and Aquaculture Department's Fishery Country Profiles which contain comprehensive country information on fisheries and aquaculture from FAO databases. |
Co-management in fisheries & aquaculture | Co-management in fisheries & aquaculture Many agencies (both governmental and non-governmental) are striving to improve the livelihoods of poor people that are dependent on aquatic resources by including these stakeholders in the planning and implementation of fisheries management. Many States have adopted decentralization as the way to implement future fisheries management, especially in developing countries, which often involves a partnership between government and the local communities i.e co-management approach. The challenge is to find a way that co-management becomes “mainstream” practice of both government and non-government organizations and communities. |
Statistics & information | Statistics & information This section contains reviews of fishery and aquaculture status and trends in the region. It also contains FAO global overviews and other information likely to be useful to fishery professionals in the region. |
Certification in capture fisheries and aquaculture | Certification in capture fisheries and aquaculture There is an increasing interest from both importing and exporting countries to focus on food safety in seafood products. Also in Asia many countries are giving increased attention to food safety issues. Because many seafood products are traded across borders both regional and internationally there are important trade issues interlinked with food safety. Certification of products is becoming of increasing interest and presents many opportunities and challenges to the APFIC region. |
Low value /trash fish | Low value /trash fish Low value or so-called “trash Fish” is a broadly used term that relates fish species that by virtue of their small size or low consumer preference have little or no commercial value. They are used widely in coastal areas either directly for human consumption of as feeds for aquaculture and livestock. Capture fisheries in the Asian region are increasingly landing these small species as quality of catch declines and there is a ready market for these fish. |
Emergencies & disasters | Emergencies and disasters This section covers the work of APFIC an d FAO in response to disasters and emergencies which have affected areas where fisheries and aquaculture are significant livelihood activities, or where the sector has been severely impacted. Information here includes background information, status reports, best practice, lessons learned and policy briefings. There are also links to other specialized emergency and disaster related websites. |

FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries | FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries The Code of Conduct was written by members of FAO, inter-governmental organizations, the fishing industry and non-governmental organizations who worked long and hard to reach agreement on the Code. In this respect the Code represents a global consensus or agreement on a wide range of fisheries and aquaculture issues. |
